Your Beliefs is Where it is Won or Lost

Written by Jamie Irvine | 3-minute read

The secret to success in business and life can be boiled down to this one formula:

  • Your beliefs drive your actions
  • Those actions produce specific results
  • Those results reinforce your original beliefs

That means that the battle is won or lost before you ever take any action.

Now many people push back on this concept and they say things like, “the environment you are in affects the results you can produce.”

While I agree that someone who is raised in an affluent family has more opportunity than someone who is raised in a poor family I don’t believe that in the end the privilege you were supposedly born with matters.

The statistics are clear.

Nearly 70% of millionaires and billionaires are first-generation. This means they had nothing when they started. This means that they started on their journey with nothing more than a belief that they could accomplish something significant and over time they repeated the success formula and spiraled upwards to epic heights.

How many times have you seen the opposite happen?

I have seen many amazing businesses be run into the ground by the children or grandchildren of the successful founder and I have also seen wealthy children and grandchildren squander their inheritances on drugs, alcohol, and partying.

People that hold to the idea that only people with a certain start in life can ever be successful just don’t understand how things work. Now that doesn’t mean that abuse of power, wealth, and privilege do not occur. They absolutely do every day, but those abuses of power do not eliminate the possibility of people overcoming those abuses and eventually succeeding.

One name proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt: Nelson Mandela

No doubt during the 27-years he spent in prison many people would have believed that those who abused their power had won. But, Nelson Mandela didn’t think so and he eventually became President of his country.

Your business and future success are always in your own head first. If you believe unwaveringly in your success and take appropriate action you will be rewarded with the success that reinforces your original belief and will propel you upward.

But, if you believe that you will fail, this will lead you on a downward spiral that will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The good news is that we all have a choice, and while it is true that most of us will not become millionaires or billionaires we all can be more successful then we are today but applying the success formula in our businesses and lives.
